La Fussiere climbs the south-facing hillside above Dezize-les-Maranges to around 400 meters over Jurassic marl littered with fossil-rich limestone scree; the stones drain hard and the elevation keeps the nights cool, so this is the firmer, more mineral and more structured of their two Maranges premiers crus, where Clos de la Boutiere lower down is the plusher one. Maranges sits at the southern tip of the Cote de Beaune and has never had the name recognition of its neighbors, which is exactly why premier cru red from here is one of Burgundy's real bargains. Fermentation runs with about twenty percent whole clusters and the wine is raised mostly in used barrels, so nothing gets between you and the fruit.
