The soil is calcareous with almost no clay and barely any topsoil before bedrock; Ballot-Millot's parcel lies at the lower edge, right against Genevrieres, on iron-rich red earth, from vines between forty-five and sixty years old. The altitude keeps the site cool, and Charles Ballot has cut yields to around 40 hectoliters per hectare to coax full ripeness out of it, which is why the wine comes out citrusy and firm rather than plush. Farming is hand-worked and herbicide-free, fermentation runs on native yeasts, and the whites see little new oak, no batonnage, twelve months in barrel and six in tank. 2024 delivered a small crop after a wet, mildew-heavy season, with whites built on purity and tension.
