Get 10% off purchases of 12+ bottles of wine. (Use code 10OFF at checkout.)

A blend of 85% Nerello Mascalese and 85% Nerello Cappuccio from a vineyard located 500m above sea level. The vines are incredibly old, pre-phylloxera and own-rooted, planted on sandy, volcanic soils. The resulting wine is powerful, savory and deeply earthy, with notes of dark cherry, smoke, leather and tobacco, backed up by fresh acidity and firm tannins.

Once viewed as an obscure island, Sicily is now considered one of the most exciting wine regions in Italy. The movement is mostly centered around Mt. Etna -- with its volcanic soils, local grape varieties, and ancient high-altitude vineyards (depicted above) -- and there is no question that Benanti's is one of the most important wineries in the region.

Antonio Galloni

"Ruby-red. Lovely aromas of plum, red cherry, redcurrant jelly, woodsmoke and an intriguing citrus nuance, plus a whiff of alcohol. Sappy, sweet and concentrated, with pungent, fresh flavors of ripe raspberry, orange peel and minerals. Though firmly built, its ripe red fruits, soft tannins and brisk acids keep this vibrant wine unfolding long on your palate. From vineyards on the southwest slope of Etna at 500 meters." -Vinous

"Benanti's 2004 Serra della Contessa is a showstopper. This blend of 80% Nerello Mascalese and 20% Nerello Cappuccio is made from 100-year old vines, many of which date to pre-phylloxera times. The wine is fermented in oak vats, then racked into French oak barrels for aging. It reveals notable intensity and purity in its expressive layers of ripe fruit, leather, minerals, menthol, licorice and smoke. Supple, finessed tannins frame the gorgeous finish. Today the wine is quite primary but in time it will likely develop into an ethereal beauty." -Robert Parker
