Giacosa kept the red label for the few bottlings he judged truly exceptional, so this is the house at its most serious. He bought all of Falletto from Luigi Brigante in 1980, which means the whole vineyard belongs to the estate. It covers 13 hectares of steep calcareous clay, shaped into its own amphitheater in the far southeastern corner of the Barolo zone, right on the border of the national park. The slope faces south to southwest, which sounds warm, but it's also one of the highest vineyards in Serralunga, rising to just over 400 metres. Giacosa considered it the best place for elegant, long-lived Barolo. Le Rocche is the historic heart of the site, at the top of its south-facing section, and Giacosa first bottled it on its own in 1997 (before that, its fruit went into his Falletto Barolo).
