The 1989 is from one of the two or three greatest classical vintages of the second half of the 20th century, made during the Marina Burlotto \/ Giuseppe Alessandria era — Marina inherited the estate in 1968 and her husband Giuseppe Alessandria ran the cellar from 1973; their son Fabio Alessandria, today's celebrated winemaker, began his viticulture\/oenology studies in 1988. Thirty-six years on, the wine is at the height of its mature curve: spearmint, sassafras, roasted meat, sweet dried fig, sautéed mushroom — that uniquely perfumed Verduno register, fully resolved.
