100% old (50+ years), high elevation Nerello Mascalese. Most Calabretta wines are aged in large tonneau but this is aged in smaller, neutral barrels, which helps to impart a bit of richness and refined, yet present, tannins. Notes of black cherry, clove, cinnamon and plum compote dominate, and there's ample acidity to balance out the plush texture.

"A pure expression of Nerello Mascalese, the Calabretta 2018 Sara sees its fruit sourced from the lower part of Feudo di Mezzo where 50-year-old vines are planted at 550 meters in elevation. This is a small production of only 1,500 bottles. Sara sees a quick but effective fermentation in steel and then goes into neutral tonneaux to age. That simple winemaking philosophy leads to bright and punchy fruit with wild berry, blue flower and balsamic herb. The wine is fresh in acidity and smooth in texture, making it perfect with a cheese-heavy lasagna or pasta. You get a lot of sheer youthful personality in this fun discovery from Etna."

"The 2018 Rosso Sara bursts from the glass with a seductive mix of cloves, cherry sauce, plums and brown spice. This is fleshy in feel, enveloping the palate with masses of red berries, tinged with balsam herbs and a contrasting twang of spiced blood orange. It leaves a subtle coating of fine tannins to linger, yet they don’t get in the way of the 2018’s energy and verve, tapering off with notes of strawberry and inner rose tones. The Rosso Sara, a varietal Nerello Mascalese, balances richness, ripe fruit and structure incredibly well."

What importer Polaner Selections has to say about this wine...

Aged for one year in a mix of old barrique and old tonneaux followed by some time in stainless steel before bottling. He normally ages in large botti but this bottling is so limited he has to use smaller oak, though that oak is neutral.
