Castello di Verduno, Barolo Riserva "Monvigliero", 2011

Burlotto and Verduno are the two producers to look for from the gem that is Monvigliero, and it's no coincidence: both were acquisitions of GB Burlotto, divided among his children. 50-year-old vines on south-facing slopes of clay and sand with limestone give the grapes for this tete-de-cuvee. Maceration is for 30 days, elevage in large botti for an equal number of months, and then another nearly four years in bottle at the winery before release. Classically powerful, yet elegant.
