That struggle is the whole point, and it gives a Chardonnay with more tension and cut than almost anything else grown in California. The site is a piece of California history — the mountain ranch that Martin Ray planted in the 1920s, now farmed by his son Peter Martin Ray, with the Chardonnay here replanted to the Mt. Eden clone in the early 1980s. John Raytek works it with the same restraint that defines all of Ceritas: native-yeast fermentation, a very light hand with new oak, no fining or filtration, and no attempt to add weight the vineyard did not give. 2021 was a low-yielding drought vintage that concentrated everything without cooking it.
