Les Petites Roches comes off gravelly, predominantly clay slopes with limestone underneath, and only free-run juice goes into it (the press wine is sent elsewhere), which is why it's all perfume and gentle tannin rather than grip. It was once the estate's Cuvee Jeunes Vignes, renamed as those vines grew up. 2023 was a fight — mildew pressure through a cool, humid stretch, heavy thinning in the vineyard — but a sunny end of season and a late heat wave delivered real ripeness, and the wine came out concentrated and fresh with unusually ripe tannins. Charles Joguet, the painter and sculptor who took over the family vines in 1957 and decided Cabernet Franc deserved Burgundy's plot-by-plot logic, is long retired; Kevin Fontaine now runs the vineyards and cellars, farming certified organic.
