In 1605 the Duke of Estrées handed the order a manuscript for an elixir of 130 plants. The monks spent more than 150 years working it out, and Brother Jérôme Maubec gets much of the credit for fixing the formula in 1764 (the liqueurs came later, in 1840, built on it). The Elixir started out as medicine as much as a drink. The monks gave it to locals during the 1832 cholera crisis, and Brother Charles first sold it at local markets, riding down from the monastery on a donkey. It only reached the US in 2022, where it goes by Végétal de la Grande Chartreuse. At 69% ABV you measure it in drops, so it comes in a 100ml bottle packed in a wooden case that keeps out the light.
