In 1988, Chateau Ausone was one of only two chateaux to hold the Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) ranking in Saint-Emilion (the other was Cheval Blanc). They've since withdrawn from the classification, but politics aside, their small, clay-and-limestone vineyards and favorable exposure have consistently led to greatness, and the fabulous 1988 vintage is no exception.
