Cantemerle is a Fifth Growth of the 1855 Classification whose vines sit just the other side of the Margaux border, on the same gravelly Haut-Médoc soils but without the cachet or the price — which is exactly why it stays perennially undervalued. The 98 hectares of siliceous gravel around the château were laid down by the Garonne grinding away at the Pyrenees; poor in nutrients, they force the vine to root deep, and the stones throw back sunlight by day and stored heat through the night. The house style is a holdout: most of the grand vin still goes into concrete vats, there's no malolactic in barrique, no fashionable wall of new oak, and no trimming back of Cabernet Sauvignon in favor of something softer. This is a Cabernet-led blend rounded out with Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, and it's now well into mature territory.
