A 5th Growth in the 1855 classification with terroir that some experts believe deserves a higher ranking, the château sits at the southern edge of the Haut-Médoc near the Margaux border on excellent gravel soils. What makes Cantemerle stand apart is what they refuse to do: no malolactic fermentation in barrique, no inflation of new oak, no reduction of Cabernet Sauvignon in favor of something softer and more immediately palatable. They still use concrete vats for much of the work — a holdout position in a region that has largely abandoned the tradition.
