The summer of 2007 brought what Climens called \"Scottish showers.\" Then a fine September let the noble rot settle in and concentrate, and after a short wet spell in October, high pressure came back. Bérénice Lurton's team picked in four separate passes through the vines between 12 September and 26 October, for a tiny yield of 8.1 hectoliters per hectare. The vineyard sits on a plateau in Barsac, where a thin layer of iron-rich red sand covers a cracked slab of starfish limestone laid down under the sea about 30 million years ago. According to the château, that limestone is what keeps Semillon fresh here, even with grapes this ripe. A fun twist: \"Climens\" means poor soil in ancient Celtic, yet the estate was nicknamed the \"Lord of Barsac\" early on. One honest note: a bottle broke in the case and stained the labels, so these are bottles for drinking, not for show.
