Guiraud was ranked Premier Cru in the 1855 classification. The house builds its style on two things: a terroir of sand, gravel and clay, and an unusually high share of Sauvignon Blanc alongside Semillon, about 35% of the vineyard today, where most neighbors lean much harder on Semillon. More recently it has become a standard-bearer for careful farming, championing biodiversity from 1996 and becoming the first Premier Grand Cru Classé certified organic, in 2011. Both of those came after this wine was made, so this bottle shows Guiraud from an earlier chapter. Great Sauternes is one of the few wines built to go this kind of distance, and a back-vintage bottle like this lets you see what time does to it without cellaring it yourself for thirty years.
