It is a good vintage to catch the estate in, too. A torrid summer with well-timed September rain gave Pomerol some of its most opulent, velvety wines of the modern era. L'Evangile sits in southeastern Pomerol, 22 hectares of clay, gravel and iron-rich sand, next door to La Conseillante, a short walk from Petrus, and separated from Cheval Blanc by little more than a dirt track, which is why the wine has always tasted like a bridge between the two. The blend is Merlot-led with Cabernet Franc, aged in French oak.
