Château Saint-Georges Côte Pavie farms about five hectares on the Pavie hillside, on clay-limestone over a molasse subsoil, and makes only a few hundred cases a year. The vineyard is planted to 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The soil is ploughed and worked the traditional way. The family has always worked with wood: for generations the Charoulets of Corrèze split oak into barrel staves and shipped it down the Dordogne to Libourne; Jules Charoulet bought this estate in 1873. The 2009 was made while his great-grandson Jacques Masson was in charge. If you want a Saint-Émilion from next door to some very famous addresses without paying for a famous name, this is one to know about.
