Clemens, the 5th of his name, along with wife Rita, are stalwarts of biodynamics and natural wine making, a rarity in the Mosel. Situated on the diving line between the middle and lower Mosel, they've single handedly regained recognition for their home vineyard, Marienberg.

The Marienberg was collateral damage of German bureaucracy in 1971. It's 23 hectares were expanded to include 91 hectares and its reputation quickly faded. Clemens and Rita have spent a lifetime teasing out the once recognized parcels and applying their lost names. Red, grey and blue slate snake through the vineyard. Each bottle, besides being a single vineyard, is further divided by slate type with a corresponding capsule to indicate which color it was grown on.

"This had been bottled only two days before my late November 2019 tasting session (typically late blending and bottling being the reason why in some years, as with vintage 2017, I miss out on tasting Busch’s “blue slate” cuvée). Fresh apple and cherry are wreathed in thyme on the nose, then come to the palate with a silky impression of lees inflection as well as generous juiciness. Seed and pit piquancy, floral and herbal pungency and a kiss of wet stone serve for delightful counterpoint on a lusciously lingering finish. (Busch presented this to me after serving its gray and red slate counterparts, and also following the vineyard-designated Nonnengarten, a progression that makes sense given these wines’ respective quality." -David Schildknecht

"Busch's Pündeicher 2018 Riesling Vom Blauen Schiefer offers a pure, precise and slatey bouquet with herbal notes of crushed stones, while the tropical fruit aromas form a perfume rather than illustrating this dry Riesling from the Marieburg's blue slate soils. The wine is creamy on the palate, with a slightly bitter finish, and it doesn't have as much finesse and mineral freshness as its counterpart from red slate soils. The acidity is fine and leads to a long and persistently mineral finish with crunchy slate "tannins." The richness of the wine (13% alcohol is a lot for this style) covers the subtleness, which is also palatable but not the leitmotif of this 2018, but it might gain finesse with bottle age. Tasted from AP 4019 in July 2020." -Stephan Reinhardt
