Mélanie Grenouilleau and Romain Nicolas founded Clos des Brétèches in 2021 in Anjou Noir, at Grand Bonnezeaux, under the wing of Mark Angeli — and in a handful of vintages they've gone from unknown to allocated. They farm 2.6 hectares organically, plow with horses rather than tractors, pick by hand and press in a manual vertical press, then age the Chenin Blanc a year on its lees in barrel with no fining, no filtration and nothing added. Bois Renault comes from the same vineyard as Les Pélioches, but from vines on a mix of colluvium and spilite — newer ground for them, and a different read on the same grape. Those volcanic, silica-rich soils are what give these wines their density and their salty, vertical drive.
