Vines were first planted here in 1923 by his great-grandmother Alice Desmarty, who sold her wines to local merchants as part of a polyculture farm. Jean-Claude is the first in the family to bottle estate Pomerol under the Clos Saint-André name, beginning with the 2004 vintage, and he calls himself a gardener rather than a viticulteur: every vine is worked by hand with no mechanical help. The 2019 is a beautifully crafted Right Bank in a strong vintage, all dark plum and violet over Pomerol's signature iron-clay grip.
