Marchionni wrote his agriculture thesis on Verdicchio di Matelica before going to work at Weingut Zähringer in Germany, where he learned to farm organically with minimal impact; he took over the long-held family estate in 1998, though the organic conversion had already begun in 1995 at the Le Prata plot, the first vineyard farmed organically in the area. That plateau below Mount Castel Santa Maria is an unusually windy spot, with the Potenza river gorge pushing hot air upslope in the afternoon and very cold air down at night — the kind of day-to-night swing that keeps a white this taut. Everything happens in stainless steel, with four months on the lees, and yields stay under 40 hl\/ha.
