Thin marlstone at the top of the plot gives way to deeper reddish-brown clay lower down. The founders' descendants have owned this estate for about four centuries. They farm roughly 10.5 hectares, mostly Pommard Premier Cru, and never make more than about 30,000 bottles a year. The 2001 comes from the Yves Confuron era: he has made the domaine's wines since 1996. The domaine serves its Rugiens at about 15°C, a little below room temperature.
