It's a wonder an estate started in 1879 continues to consistently make not only some of the best wines in Rioja, but also the best values. The 2017 Crianza was grown under perfect conditions and is a traditional blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Mazuelo aged in American oak for 1 year and bottle since then. This is a classic example of red fruits, cocoa and vanilla, but with layers of violets, licorice, for extra complexity.
"Glistening ruby-red. Aromas of fresh red berries, cherry and vanilla reveal subtle spice and herb nuances. Juicy and supple on the palate, offering lively red currant and bitter cherry flavors that turn sweeter on the back half. In an appealingly approachable style, delivering very good finishing energy, smooth tannin's and lingering red fruit notes. Drinking window: 2021 - 2026"
"This lively red combines depth with energy. Bright berry and cherry flavors mingle with notes of fresh herb, cocoa and toast, supported by light tannins and crisp acidity. Focused and harmonious. Tempranillo, Garnacha and Mazuelo."
"Reedy berry and dusty earth aromas are pretty basic, while this feels raw and grainy. Oaky flavors of clove and berry fruits are muddled, while this tastes woody and slightly green and lacking on the finish." -Michael Schachner
Grape Variety: Tempranillo 85%, Garnacha and Mazuelo 15%Hand harvested, de-stalked, and short macerated, followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a temperature between 26 and 28ºC to retain varietal aromas. Following alcoholic fermentation the wine was transferred to American oak casks where it remained for at least 12 months, with regular rackings to develop its finesse.
