The result is a Côtes du Rhône built on juicy fruit and lift rather than bulk, and it's the kind of everyday bottle that quietly outclasses what else sits beside it. Balme quit a wine sales job at 19 to study viticulture, apprenticed with Marcel Richaud, and made her first vintage at 23 from four hectares of her father Bernard's vines; the two now farm the estate together across Buisson, Rasteau and Roaix. There's a lovely circularity to it: her grandfather, M. Charavin, once lent a young Richaud cellar space to make his first wines and taught him the ropes — decades later Richaud returned the favor by mentoring Elodie. The vineyards sit on white clay, red marl and sand, with saffre (a compact sandstone that holds water and keeps the soil cooler than pure sand) underneath most of it.
