This Côte Rôtie is produced from twenty different parcels, a study of schist soil variations on 15 different sites. The whole bunches macerate for three weeks before 22 months in oak. Brilliantly aromatic and ripe with silky, elegant tannins, this has the complexity to reward extensive cellaring.

Domaine Jamet is a reference point in Côte-Rôtie. Their holdings read like a “who’s who” of top vineyard sites in the AOC, including names like Fongeant, Chavaroche, Les Moutonnes, La Landonne, Côte Blonde, Côte Rozier, and Côte Brune. Like Chave in Hermitage, he generally likes to blend all all the sites together to present a wine that is a truly complete Côte-Rôtie, taking advantage of all that the different terroirs have to offer. (He does reserve a tiny number of berries for a separate Côte Brune bottling that is rarely seen.)

This practice of blending vineyard sites is an old tradition in the Northern Rhone, consistent with Jamet’s general approach in the winery. His Côte-Rôtie is almost all whole cluster. He uses no barriques, opting instead for the larger demi-muids. The other big names who made wines like this in Côte-Rôtie have either retired (Gentaz) or changed course (Guigal). Jamet — specifically Jean-Paul Jamet, who’s been at it since he was a 16 year old boy in 1976 — has stuck it out.

"Opaque ruby. Vibrant blackberry, cherry, incense, Moroccan spice, potpourri and smoky mineral qualities on the expansive, seductively perfumed nose. Offers vibrant black and blue fruit, spicecake, olive and floral pastille flavors that show bright detail and energetic mineral lift. The floral and spice notes recur strongly on the youthfully gripping finish, which features mounting tannins and lingering smokiness." -Vinous

"I have scribbles on seven different components of the 2020 Cote Rotie in my notebook, and that is just a fraction of what lies resting in the deep Jamet cellar. To generalize and predict what wizardry Jean-Paul Jamet will conjure out of bottle is a bit of a fool's errand, but overall, I found the 2020 samples to show ripe, dark-fruit flavors balanced by graceful aromatics. Generally, the wines are medium to full-bodied, with supple, silky tannins and good freshness."

"A combination of separate lieux-dits which show a classic, fresh and focused vintage, with each component reflecting its origins with great clarity. It's an aromatic style, with slight tannins and fairly low but balanced acidity. All whole-bunch fermented, matured mostly in old demi-muids."
