What the growers salvaged turned into the freshest, most transparent red Burgundy in a decade: a cool, damp season with heavy mildew pressure, a harvest that came in around September 20th, nearly a month later than 2020, and wines with moderate alcohol, high acidity and red rather than black fruit. This is old-school Volnay, and it suits Lafarge perfectly, since Frederic and daughter Clothilde have never chased power in the first place. The village bottling comes from Les Famines, Les Buttes and Cros Martin, roughly 60-year-old vines on clay-limestone farmed under Ecocert organic and Demeter biodynamic certification, fully destemmed, fermented on ambient yeasts and aged 18 months in used barrels with no fining or filtration.
