Domaine Tempier was bottling pale pink Provencal wine long before rose filled American shelves — Lucien Peyraud championed Mourvedre when the region's noble grapes were being ripped out for higher-yielding varieties, and by 1941, thanks to him and his neighbors, Bandol had its own AOC. The rose is roughly half Mourvedre with Grenache and Cinsault, drawn from the estate's full spread of clay-limestone soils, from sandy Santonian limestone to rudist limestone, all farmed organically and bottled at the domaine. That makes it a serious wine rather than a seasonal one: the 2022 is refreshing enough for the Provencal heat but powerful enough for the region's hearty cooking, and very ageworthy — a couple of years in bottle only adds layers. Quantities are constrained and demand for this one never lets up.
