He grew up on Tenerife with no winemaking family behind him beyond his postman father's small plot of vines, then in 2012 jumped from one volcanic island to another: first an internship with Arianna Occhipinti in Vittoria, then enologist at Andrea Franchetti's Passopisciaro on Etna, before starting his own project on the mountain's north face in 2014. His first vintages were trucked back to Occhipinti's cellar and bottled as simple IGT Terre Siciliane, and even now that he has his own winery on Etna he has chosen to keep the humble designation. The wine is Minnella-led — about half the blend — with Carricante, Catarratto, Grecanico and Inzolia making up the rest, hand-harvested and both fermented and aged in concrete tank so nothing gets in the way of the site.
