The site itself is one of Germany's greatest: worn red and grey slate, heavily weathered in the western part so roots drive deep, with a rising proportion of quartzite adding another dimension, and steady Saar breezes keeping everything fresh. Only the estate's Prädikat wines from the Scharzhofberg and the Wiltinger braune Kupp are allowed to carry a vineyard name on the label, and the family has been at the Scharzhof since Elisabeth Koch married a Napoleonic soldier named Felix Müller in the early 1800s.
