Ginestra Casa Maté is one of Monforte’s most revered vineyards, known for its dense clay-limestone soils and warm, southwest exposure. Elio Grasso farms these vines meticulously, and the result is a Barolo of remarkable concentration, complexity, and longevity. Compared to the airy lift of Gavarini, Casa Maté is darker and more grounded—an earthier, more brooding expression of the Nebbiolo grape.

In the beautifully balanced 2021 vintage, this wine offers layers of black cherry, crushed rose, licorice, tar, and menthol, all wrapped in firm tannins and vibrant acidity. The palate is expansive and powerful, but never heavy, with fine structure and a finish that echoes for minutes.

Aged in large Slavonian oak casks for over two years, Casa Maté is classic in style and serious in age-worthiness. While it shows intensity and polish now, it will reward a decade or more of patience—and stand among the most compelling Barolos of the vintage.

Elio Grasso is one of the star producers in the Barolo village of Monforte. They specialize in just one Cru: Ginestra. Ginestra is one of those great Barolo sites, like Rocche or Brunate, that face southeast, for the most part, ideal for scooping up the cool morning sun. But Ginestra stands apart for its intense concentration of limestone. It is one of only 10 Crus to be designated “Exceptional” in Antonio Galloni’s vineyard rankings.

Ginestra is itself divided into several sub-Crus, and Grasso actually releases several different Barolos from each specific site – all of which are quite deep and powerful in their own particular ways.

"The 2021 Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè is fabulous. Bright and transparent, with captivating depth, the 2021 is a stunning beauty. Enveloping balsamic notes make a strong opening statement that remains a theme here. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice and blood orange all come alive in the glass. What a wine!" -Antonio Galloni

"Just 300m away from Gavarini Chiniera, Casa Matè sits slightly lower, between 300 to 350m. Characterised by richer clay soil and full south exposure, it is always the first to bud and to be picked, usually 10 days earlier than Gavarini Chiniera. Intense aromas of liquorice, bay leaf and rosemary make for a pungent introduction. Laden with dark cherry and black raspberry, the palate is luscious on the entry, becoming more rigid as virile, commanding tannins take hold. Remarkably balanced in its girth, power and concentration." -Michaela Morris
