elvio-cogno-barolo-1988-gdpcell-cnsn
Elvio Cogno, Barolo, 1988

A piece of Barolo history with a story attached. In 1988, Elvio Cogno was still cellar master and partner at Marcarini in La Morra — the legendary winemaker who put cru Brunate on the map back in 1964 with one of the first single-vineyard Barolos ever labeled. He wouldn't leave to found his own Novello estate until 1990. So a Barolo bearing the Elvio Cogno name from a 1988 vintage is an unusual artifact: the wine reflects Cogno's hand during his Marcarini-era prime, in a good classical Piedmont vintage. Thirty-seven years on, this is a fully mature Barolo with all the tertiary depth — leather, dried flowers, undergrowth — that long-resolved Nebbiolo develops. Provenance-noted: this is a library bottle from the Cogno legacy. For collectors of Barolo history.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Elvio-Cogno-Barolo-1988-Red-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1778338054
