Its stony blue slate and quartzite make the vines struggle, which keeps the berries small and gives the fruit a particularly fine aroma. In 2005 a dry summer gave naturally concentrated grapes, while evaporation shrank the crop. Picking started cautiously on 20 October in beautifully dry weather. They've said they never had a better year for nobly sweet wines, and that the acidity in their 2005s landed right where they wanted it.
