Eric Texier, a former nuclear engineer turned vigneron, almost single-handedly resurrected Brezeme, a near-forgotten enclave in the northern Cotes-du-Rhone, replanting its limestone-marl slopes with old-style Syrah. This is the Vieille Serine, named for the original local, non-clonal Syrah (\"Serine\" is the area's old name for the grape), farmed organically and made with native yeasts and little to no sulfur. The 2009 was a warm, generous vintage, and at this age it has shed its youthful grip and moved into savory, secondary territory.
