On Friday, October 18th at 6pm, Letizia Patanè from Tenuta di Trinoro in Tuscany will join us on the Flatiron Wine School mezzanine for a seminar on the wines of this estate famous for its powerful, cellar-worthy red wines.
Located in a remote corner of southeastern Tuscany, Tenuta di Trinoro specializes in rich, age-worthy red wines made of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot. The estate sits in viticultural isolation in the Orcia Valley near Sarteano, where Tuscany meets Umbria and Lazio. The founder, Andrea Franchetti, acquired the property in the 1980s and in the beginning of the 1990s started planting his first vines.
Tenuta di Trinoro sits on 500 acres of land in a remote corner of Tuscany, far from
the area’s common wine appellations. The location boasts a mosaic of
different soils: deep gravel soils of alluvial origin in the lower parts of the estate;
more rocks and limestone in the higher parts. Everywhere, clay dominates. The best spots host the estate’s 55 acres of high-density vineyards with 4,000 plants
per acre. Here the soils are similar to what we find in St. Emilion and planting
material for the vineyards was selected from prominent chateaux in Pomerol.
High density, aggressive grape thinning, low yields and much attention in choosing the
perfect time to pick produce concentrated grapes with full phenolic ripeness. The estate separates its vineyards into 50 small parcels which are harvested separately and kept separate throughout fermentation and aging in the cellar. Cabernet Franc and Merlot are the main varieties together with some Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and a little bit of Semillon.
Tickets for this class are $30 and a $20 store credit will be issued with your purchase. We hope you can join us as we welcome cold weather with these Bordeaux-inspired Tuscan reds.
