The small village of Verduno is the home of Pelaverga, but less than a dozen local producers have stayed true to Verduno’s special grape. It’s this sun-bleached hamlet, kissed by the breezes coming off the river Tanaro, that the Alessandria family calls home.

The Alessandria "brothers" have been farming grapes and making Barolo in the ancient village of Verduno since the 1800's. Indeed they and some of their neighbors were among the very first to bottle the dry, complex and age-worthy Nebbiolo that Barolo is now famous for. Today, the actual brothers are Gian Battista and Alessandro, with Alessandro's son Vittore increasingly at the helm, and they work together much the same as their familly has for generations.

Farming is crucial: they use organic principles in all of their 30 hectares of vineyards.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Barolo Gramolere is another striking wine in this range from Vittore Alessandria. It offers a fabulous combination of structure and depth that makes it easy to appreciate in the early going, in relative terms. Bright red berry fruit, chalk, white pepper, dried herbs and deep spicy notes are all laced together. Somewhat surprisingly, the Gramolere is the most approachable of the 2016s today, although I would not plan on opening a bottle for at least a few years." -Vinous

"If you consider the Barolo playbook at Fratelli Alessandria, the 2016 Barolo Gramolere takes the intensity and power up one more notch. You get black fruit and blackberry, but there is enough vibrant red fruit to keep this wine aligned with the more elegant and traditional side of Barolo. The wine shows compelling infinities with both the powerful and the elegant side of Nebbiolo. There are noticeable mineral notes and even a spot of savory salinity. However, Gramolere definitely has the power and inner grit to withstand long cellar aging."

"Fratelli Alessandria is deeply rooted in the village of Verduno and is best known for its top-notch Monvigliero bottling. The estate also owns a steep, sandy 2ha plot in Monforte d’Alba’s Gramolere cru, and as with all of the wines at this address, this demonstrates great precision and a distinctly fragrant character. Traces of winter mint and liquorice weave through the mineral-driven, sappy, savoury Barolo. Great depth of dark fruit is shored up by a firm backbone of tactile clayey tannins and countered by an appetising saline edge."

Wine Enthusiast

"Pressed rose, camphor, woodland berry, dark spice and new leather are just some of the aromas you'll find on this fragrant red. Radiant, structured and boasting finesse and depth, the palate delivers raspberry compote, mature morello cherry, cinnamon and menthol framed in taut refined tannins. It's well balanced, with bright acidity."
