"Albe" is the plural of "Alba", which means dawn. The name refers to the three different dawns seen by the east-facing slopes that give us this wine. All three slopes are some of the highest altitude sites within the commune of Barolo, all clustered around the village of Vergne at Barolo's western edge. This micro-terroir is Vajra's home and specialty. Since 1970, when Aldo Vajra started out with a tiny 0.3 hectare holding, the Vajras have learned to master this corner of Barolo and in so doing have become one of Nebbiolo's greatest producers anywhere.

The Vajra family are master winemakers in the Commune of Barolo, specializing in the very western corner where the Langhe hills begin to rub up against the Alps. Active since the nineteenth century, the property was revitalised in 1968 by Aldo Vajra. Since taking the helm, Aldo has remained an influential force in Barolo, pioneering organic viticulture and resuscitating lesser-known varieties like Freisa. Aldo’s passion for his craft is shared by his children who now join him in the vines and cellar.
While the Vajras are progressive in their actions, their wines are classic. Farming is meticulous and vinification of the estate’s flagship Barolos, from magnificent high altitude crus, follows the time-honored protocol of long fermentation and aging in large neutral oak barrels.
The resulting wines are known for, more than anything else, their purity. Vajra makes Barolo so airy that it seems to float, its essence of Nebbiolo wafting from the glass and seeping across your palate like mist.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

RP 94
"If you were to consider the entire portfolio of wines made in the Barolo appellation, this wine always stands in its own little corner. Albe is a brand on its own, and it represents one of the most versatile, accessible and well-priced Baroli to emerge from the appellation. The G.D. Vajra 2016 Barolo Albe sets off on the right foot, offering forthcoming intensity with forest fruit, wild cherry, crushed stone and blue flowers. Winemaking is straightforward in stainless steel, and the wine finishes in Slavonian oak casks."

Wine Spectator

"Elegant and expressive, this red evokes cherry, raspberry and floral notes, aligned to a refined structure. This is balanced and leaves an aftertaste of fruit, tobacco and iron. Best from 2023 through 2043."

Wine Enthusiast

"Aromas of woodland berry, new leather, camphor and pressed rose waft out of the glass. Juicy and delicious, the chewy palate doles out succulent Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry and white pepper. Polished tannins and fresh acidity give it an immediate appeal but this also offers several years of drinking pleasure. Drink through 2028." -Kerin O'keefe
