The soil is terres rouges, iron-rich red clay-limestone rather than the pale gravelly ground of central Chambolle, and it gives a brooding, firmly built wine with large-scaled tannins and sappy red fruit in place of floral prettiness. Ghislaine Barthod owns about a quarter hectare of forty-five-year-old vines here, one of eleven premier crus she bottles separately from just 5.86 hectares, with no grand cru anywhere in the range. The winemaking never changes from parcel to parcel, with partial destemming, wild yeasts, a short cool maceration and about twenty months in barrel with 20 to 25 percent new oak, so what you taste is the hill. 2023 brought a big crop that had to be cut hard, a cool summer and a fast harvest under early-September heat, and the reds are fresh and perfumed with real concentration behind them.
