In lesser years the fruit goes into the regular Barolo or is sold as Langhe Nebbiolo, so the fact that a 2008 exists at all tells you what the family thought of the year. This bottle is a magnum. The vineyard sits at 280 metres in Castiglione Falletto, in the centre of the Barolo zone. It faces south-west with nothing around it to block the sun, and its soil is blue-grey, limestone-rich marl laid down by an ancient sea. Land records list Monprivato as a vineyard as far back as 1666, and Renato Ratti counted it among the eleven great historic vineyards of Barolo. The family has owned it since 1904, and much of it is planted to the Michét strain of Nebbiolo that Maurizio Mascarello first brought in back in 1921. In the cellar the approach has been called \"enlightened traditionalism\": no new French barrels, no roto-fermenters, just the old Slavonian oak casks Mauro's father bought in the 1950s.
