A true legend in the commune of Barolo, Beppe Rinaldi was the last of the “Last of the Mohicans” – the others were Bartolo Mascarello and Teobaldo Cappellano – who resisted modern trends. Sadly, he died in 2018 at a still young 69, and the estate is now run by his daughters Marta and Carlotta (the wine-maker and farmer, respectively), who are extremely worthy successors. Like Bartolo Mascarello, Beppe believed in the magic of blending different sites, but EU labeling laws forced him to make some compromises. They now release a Brunate, which is 85% Brunate and the rest Le Coste, and a “Tre Tine”, which is a blend of their remaining grapes from Le Coste, plus San Lorenzo and Ravera. They also have a range of wines from lesser grapes that are excellent but rarely seen in the United States because they are not imported via regular channels.

"Moderately saturated medium red. Decadent, expressive, highly complex nose combines cherry liqueur, mocha, white pepper, sage, rosemary and cinnamon. At once silky and penetrating, with a bit less of the saline, earthy side of the 2008 and more cherry liqueur character. Finishes with substantial tannins, terrific energy and captivating lingering perfume. This seems to be in the process of shutting down today; it was bottled in April. I would not be surprised if this beauty merited an even higher score with seven or eight years of bottle aging." -Vinous

"The 2007 Barolo Brunate-Le Coste is a regal, aristocratic Barolo. Firm tannins keep some of the extroverted qualities of the vintage in check. This shows marvelous inner minerality and coolness, with deep layers of fruit, menthol, licorice and tar that fill out the wine’s broad shouldered frame. The Brunte-Le Coste shuts down pretty quickly in the glass, suggesting it may be headed for a period of dormancy. Today, it is flat-out stunning."

"A ripe, sweet cherry- and raspberry-flavored red, accented by white pepper, cinnamon and floral notes. This is generous and vibrant, with a pleasant hint of astringency on the finish. Very elegant, in a traditional style, where finesse meets intensity."
