It sits mid-slope and faces due east in the heart of Santenots du Milieu, on brown, manganese-rich soil over hard, rounded limestone the locals call \"pierres percées\" (pierced stones). Here's a quirk worth knowing: Santenots actually lies inside the commune of Meursault, but when it's planted to Pinot Noir the wine is labelled Volnay, and only the Chardonnay goes out as Meursault-Santenots. The domaine describes its 2005 reds as pure, powerful and concentrated, and Nadine Gublin, the house oenologist since 1990, made the wine that year.
