"(Domaine Joseph Roty Gevrey-Chambertin "Les Fontenys" 1er Cru Red) A background touch of bourgeon de cassis isn't enough to completely overshadow the aromas of spiced plum, anise, cherry and iron-inflected earth - even so, I would decant this first if you're going to try a bottle young. The super-sleek, delineated and tautly muscular flavors retain a degree of refinement that borders on finesse, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, highly complex and long finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This may better harmonize but at the moment it's a bit awkward."

The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh and vibrant. The velvety-textured finish is very caressing. Pure and focused, with a surfeit of energy, this is a superb Premier Cru from Roty.
