The site is Röttgen, just downstream of Winningen, Devonian slate with loess and quartzite on one of the steepest slopes along the river; the Knebels count it among the most defining vineyards around the village, its meagre soils and extreme pitch giving wines of unusual energy and inner tension. That tension is the whole point in a wine this sweet — it's what keeps the sugar from turning heavy. The family's roots in Winningen go back to 1642, though the modern estate dates only to 1990, and their terraces tower between the slate rocks in parcels small and scattered enough that everything is done by hand. Knebel describes this bottling as lovingly and meticulously selected, with beguiling complex fruit, incredibly dense and long.
