This steep hill in a side valley near the Layen Castle is ringed by rock faces that block the wind from every direction but south, trapping heat in a natural amphitheater. Underfoot it's quartzite laced with volcanic rock, the only one of the estate's grand crus with a volcanic streak, and that shows up as depth and drive rather than mere ripeness. Grosses Gewachs means fully dry, farmed organically and fermented with wild yeasts.
