Renato Spanu, Nadia and Christian Betti, Enrico Paternoster and Valerio Zorzi met in their twenties at the agricultural institute in San Michele all'Adige, up in Trentino. They then moved to San Gimignano and founded La Lastra in 1994. Spanu, the team's agronomist, even wrote his graduation thesis on improving the genetics of Vernaccia, so this is a grape they know closely. Their Vernaccia vines grow at around 260 meters on Pliocene clay with seams of calcareous sand, on hillsides facing southeast to southwest. Everything is about keeping the grapes fresh: they travel to the winery on dry ice.
