This one goes all the way, and the vineyard is what makes that possible. The fruit comes from the steepest hillside blocks of Chene Vineyard in Edna Valley, which sit on Monterey formation bedrock. The vines there stay low-vigour without any help and set small, concentrated clusters whose stems turn woody and ripe early, and ripe stems are exactly what you need before you ferment whole bunches. Gina Hildebrand, who founded Lady of the Sunshine in 2017, uses 100% whole clusters and native yeast. She ages the wine in neutral French oak and bottles it unfined and unfiltered. The farming is certified biodynamic. Lady of the Sunshine wines are concentrated, clear-cut and linear, and they need air.
