Le Ragnaie, Brunello di Montalcino VV, 2015

Available for Same Day Delivery (or Pickup) in Manhattan.
This was Ian d'Agata's highest scoring Brunello in Vinous! It's made 100% from old vines in the high-altitude Ragnaie vineyard. d'Agata: "great class and gorgeous purity to the dark and red berry, herb and bitter chocolate flavors. Penetrating minerality contributes to the impression of precision and verve on the long, multilayered and smooth finish."

Le Ragnaie

Le Ragnaie is the greatest thing to emerge in Montalcino so far this century. It may be the greatest thing to emerge in Montalcino since the rise of Soldera, with whom they have much in common: an uncompromising adherence to tradition (aging exclusively in large neutral Slavonian oak barrels, ultra-long macerations), natural farming, minimal intervention in the cellar, and excellent terroir.

But there is one way in which Le Ragnaie stands apart from Soldera that makes their wines even more extreme: high altitudes. Le Ragnaie farms the highest altitude vines in Brunello di Montalcino! Some vineyards are so high up that they are above Brunello di Montalcino's legal limit of 600 meters.

"Wild cherries, dried blueberries and dark currants open the bouquet of Le Ragnaie's 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie V. V. The cherry signature is forefront, and it emerges with medicinal and balsamic notes towed in close. Fruit comes from the estate's oldest vines (aged 50 years old) planted in the highest part of the appellation (at 600 meters above sea level). The bouquet is seamless, putting forth a chain of similar fruit and spice-related aromas that fall neatly in line. This effect is further reinforced as the wine evolves steadily in the glass. Of the various Brunello Selezioni presented by Le Ragnaie, this wine is the most classic in approach with a slightly more closed and austere personality that will serve it well as it continues its bottle evolution." -Monica Larner

"Riccardo Campinoti's plot of old vines was planted in 1968. At upwards of 600 metres, it is one of the highest altitude Brunello vineyards and the last at Le Ragnaie to be picked. In 2015, it was harvested in the second week of October. This reveals itself slowly with curious iron, leather and chestnut notes. The palate offers more of the fruit generosity of the vintage yet is still commanding, rigid and ultimately mineral-driven. Very much an iron fist that needs time to loosen its grip."

"Made with organically farmed grapes and fermented with indigenous yeasts, this opens with varietal aromas of ripe dark-skinned fruit, forest floor, fragrant purple flower, spice and new leather. Full bodied and enveloping, the concentrated, chewy palate offers juicy Marasca cherry, ripe plum, licorice and baking spice framed in firm, velvety tannins. It's delicious and already tempting but let it fully develop. Drink 2023–2030." -Kerin O'Keefe
