In 1999 Lafon bought vineyards in a region long known for over-cropped co-op Chardonnay, brought biodynamic farming with him, and treated his little-known parcels like premier crus. Clos du Four is a 1.4-hectare clos in a steep amphitheatre right behind the winery. Its east-facing vines sit mid-slope at 250 metres in deep soil with more clay than most parcels in the commune, full of limestone and small rocks broken off the bedrock. Clos du Four is built to be mineral and long, and its richness usually needs at least a year in bottle to show. This one has had more than twenty.
