Luis Rodriguez, Vina de Martin Escolma Blanco, 2012

White Wine from Galicia, Spain
Available for Same Day Delivery (or Pickup) in Manhattan.
Made only in the best vintages, this is a selection of the oldest, and thus, lowest-yielding vines, mostly Treixadura on the same steep, granite slopes. It is aged on the lees for one year, and then in bottle for another three. It is a truly exceptional wine, reminiscent in many ways of the best that Burgundy has to offer. It finds balance between density and delicacy, with notes of quince, sea salt and stony granite. Its potential for aging is enormous. A truly noble wine.

Over the past three decades, Luis Rodriguez has quietly established himself as the master of the Ribeiro, that tiny corner of Galicia that has historically been home to some of Spain’s greatest wines. His wines are not showy, and they don’t adhere to the any of the trends or fads that periodically seize the wine world. They are gorgeous wines, crafted entirely of native grapes, and they veritably roar with maritime terroir.

Centuries ago, Ribeiro was responsible for some of the most highly esteemed and widely traded wines in Europe, but a series of devastations (war, disease, war again) cut that fame short. Today, it is a region ripe for revival. A truly passionate and skilled winemaker like Rodriguez can take the region’s granitic soil, its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and its unique grapes and produce wines that are much more than the sum of their parts—something truly magical.

Over the last 30 years, Luis Rodriguez has managed to amass close to a hundred micro-parcels, all around the small town of Arnoia. From these vines, he produces incredibly complex, mineral-driven and deliciously distinctive wines; there is no doubt that his can hold their own against some of the finest wines from anywhere. Despite all hailing from the same tiny geographic area, there are striking differences between each cuvée.

These are wines we love to drink: honest, authentic and entirely singular examples of passion and talent, united in one winemaker.

"Among the best vintages of this bottling, the 2012 Viña de Martín Escolma is a selection from the oldest vineyards on poorer soils that yield no more than one kilo of fruit per plant. It's a blend of Treixadura, Albariño, Lado and Torrontés fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak barrels of different sizes, as the different vineyards are fermented separately. The wines are blended one year later and are fined, filtered and bottled; the bottles are kept for three years before being released. By the time the wine reaches us it has developed all the complexity of bottle aging with notes of diesel, pollen, beeswax, wet granite and spices. The palate shows very good balance and acidity for a warm vintage with superb depth and complexity. This is a world class Ribeiro with length and minerality. Bravo!" -Robert Parker
