Luneau-Papin, in Le Landreau, is one of the greatest addresses in Muscadet — up there with Pépière, Bregeon and Landron — and \"L d'Or\" is the family's flagship: old vines on a narrow vein of granite and two-mica gneiss off the Armorican Massif, native-yeast fermented and left unracked on its fine lees in underground glass-tiled vats before bottling sur lie. Low alcohol, high natural acidity, no oak and long lees contact are why this cuvée has been the appellation's reference point for ageing since the late 1990s. 2007 was a hard year in the Loire: a freakishly warm April pushed flowering early, then a cold, wet, mildew-ridden summer nearly took the crop before a fine September rescued it. What survived gave dry whites of very clean flavour and unusually high acidity, and that is exactly this bottle — the most linear and mineral wine of the five, closer to classic young Muscadet than to a mature white. It has years left.
