Luneau-Papin, in Le Landreau, is one of the greatest addresses in Muscadet — up there with Pépière, Bregeon and Landron — and \"L d'Or\" is the family's flagship: old vines on a narrow vein of granite and two-mica gneiss off the Armorican Massif, native-yeast fermented and held unracked on its fine lees in underground glass-tiled vats before bottling sur lie. Low alcohol, high acidity, no oak and long lees contact are the mechanics behind twenty-year Muscadet, and this cuvée has been the appellation's ageing benchmark since the late 1990s. 2008 began badly, with an April frost that hit the Muscadet vineyards hard and cut the crop, followed by a cold, wet summer; then a brilliant September and October ripened what was left. The reduced yields concentrated the wine and the cool season kept the acidity high, which is why it is the most tightly wound of these five and the one that most rewards air.
